Why Was This Mission Created?
The birth of the Bagalamukhi Matri Mission is rooted in a long journey of lived history, devotion, and inner calling. From early childhood, the Mission’s head grew up witnessing the worship of Goddess Bagalā within his own home. His family lineage—especially that of the revered mother-worshipper Somananda Nāth—has long been connected with accomplished tantric practitioners, many of whom were renowned across India. Tantric practice thus flowed naturally through his bloodline. From the very beginning, he felt an inexplicable and deep attraction toward Goddess Bagalā—an attraction that eventually shaped the vision of this Mission.
Although he practiced the worship of many deities along the tantric path, Mahāmāyā Bagalā became the sole spiritual treasure of his life. He often says that in this age of Kali, the only true path to liberation for humanity lies in the worship of Goddess Bagalamukhi. When a person feels completely cornered by life—when there seems to be no way forward—it is Mother Pītāmbarī who becomes the final refuge. With the intention of bringing Her grace closer to householders and ordinary people, he founded the Bagalāmukhī Mātrī Mission.
It is important to mention that the inspiration behind establishing this Mission came from his Gurudev’s own master, the great Nāth yogi and sādhaka Śrīmat Vāsudev Paramahaṁsa. Sādhaka Vāsudev strongly believed that the Mother’s worship should reach every home. Guided by this vision, he established the Śrī Śrī Mahāmāyā Bagalāmukhī Śānti Āśram in Kolkata. Carrying forward his Guru’s ideals and vision, the present Mission came into being.
The core purpose of the Mission is to awaken Ātmabodha—self-realization—within every individual and to guide seekers toward the path of true spiritual peace. People come here to chant the Mother’s name, to proclaim Her victory, to practice authentic dharma, and above all, to spread the name of Bagalā everywhere. To unite devotees in this shared spiritual purpose, the Bagalāmukhī Mātrī Mission was formed.
Beyond this, one of the Mission’s most important goals is Śiva-sevā—serving humanity with compassion. The suffering human being carries the presence of the Goddess within; Śiva resides in every living being. For this reason, service to life itself remains a central activity of the Mission throughout the year. The Mission’s head has often rushed to offer winter clothing to ascetics, provided study materials to underprivileged students in rural schools, and stood as a guardian for children who have lost their parents—offering them food, clothing, and care, simply to bring a smile to the faces of those living embodiments of Śiva.
The head of the Mission often reminds us that the Divine resides both within every being and deep within one’s own heart. A seeker must first find the Mother within, and only then can truly recognize Her in others. Mother-sādhaka Somananda Nāth spends even the night before his birthday among the marginalized—wandering through Kolkata to find people suffering on the streets—because he believes that this is where his Mother truly resides. The fundamental purpose of establishing the Mātrī Mission is precisely this: serving living beings with the awareness of Śiva within them.
As the Mission’s head says, even a single-room space can become the foundation of a great mission if its intention is noble and meant for the welfare of all. With purity of purpose, that small beginning can grow into a vast, sheltering tree. The Bagalāmukhī Mātrī Mission is steadily moving along that path—and for this journey, it seeks your wholehearted support and companionship. Walk with us, and become a part of this shared path forward.
